The following market sector overview focuses on the advanced engineering sector at a global, European, UK and south-west regional level. The advanced engineering sector is one of six South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA) key sectors and according to 1992 standard industrial classification (SIC) codes comprises of three sub-groups:
- The aerospace industry, divides into three further sub-groups, airframe manufacture, engine manufacture and avionics
- Automotive, divided into vehicle manufacture and assembly and automotive components
- Other advanced engineered products, instruments, electronic valves and other electronic products, medical equipment, industrial process control equipment, optical instruments and machine tools'.
